Blue Cuckoo Farm

Bringing our Yorkshire farm back to life

A little farm with lots going on.

This is our little piece of paradise — albeit one with an awful lot of work still to do. Our dream is to turn the farm into a beautiful, productive and sustainable place to live out our dotage. Along the way, we’re learning new skills, getting creative and discovering just how much can be reused, repurposed and brought back to life.

We didn’t exactly plan this.

Five years ago, we moved into a static caravan on John’s family farm, expecting to be there while we converted an old barn. Things didn’t quite go to plan — and there have been a fair few twists and turns since.

Somewhere amongst all the twists and turns, we realised we didn’t want to leave.

A bumpy, green, gourd partially covered by large green leaves, growing on the ground.

Growing our own way.

We’re trying to make good use of the space and resources we have around the farm — growing things we love, finding new uses for old things and gradually becoming a little more sustainable along the way.

Our pumpkin patch replaced a caravan storage area, our Christmas tree nursery started with 150 tiny trees on our decking, and 200 rather unpromising-looking willow sticks are now a living fedge and coppice.

We’re also making things to sell, including our Grunty Pigs and a collection of old, found and repurposed containers planted up for a new life.

Still a work in progress.
And probably always will be.
